Corona pandemic and migration

The Corona pandemic is having a massive impact on migration movements. Lots of countries have initiated far-reaching restrictions on entry. At the same time, COVID-19 poses a particular threat in shared accommodation for refugees. This is because many people live together in a confined space.

Some current realities:

  • There are many travel restrictions to try to contain the virus.
  • Most countries are prohibiting entry of residents from other countries or being very strict about who can enter and why.
  • Borders have been closed.
  • Labor migration has not been possible due to closed borders.
  • The asylum seeking process has been slower, because all government offices are overwhelmed and people are out sick.
